can you use hemp seeds in smoothies

Strawberry Hemp Seed Smoothie

I’ve been so into chia seeds lately that I kind of forgot about hemp seeds until last month’s Expo West. Hemp was everywhere! Apparently it’s still a hot food trend, and for good reason: hemp seeds do offer great nutritional bang for your buck.

A little more on hemp seeds…

What are they?

Hemp seeds are in the seed/nut family, and have a nutty flavor and crunchy texture, kind of like flax or chia.

What’s so healthy about hemp?

Hemp seeds are a great plant source of protein and healthy fat, and are also rich in vitamins and minerals. Some people claim to have more energy and improved digestion after adding hemp seeds to their diet (probably because of the fiber, protein, and healthy fat content).

Should I start eating hemp?

If you’re a vegetarian or just trying to eat more plant-based proteins, give hemp seeds a try. They are especially good for people who like to sprinkle a little crunch on top of their yogurt, smoothies, oatmeal or salads. Definitely worth working into your nut & seed rotation.

Are there any reasons not to eat hemp?

Like all nuts and seeds, hemp seeds are a dense source of calories and fat. Two tablespoons has about 85 calories and 7 grams of fat (the heart-healthy kind of fat), so while they are healthy, I don’t recommend you sprinkle hemp seeds on everything you eat. But if you replace some of the less-healthy fats in your diet with any nuts/seeds – hemp included – you’ll be doing your body a favor.

What can I do with these little seeds?

Sprinkle them on yogurt, oatmeal, smoothies, and salad. Add them to granola, baked goods, or bread. Here are tons of delicious and unique recipe ideas using hemp.

Most recently I made a super creamy Strawberry Hemp Seed Smoothie (pictured above) that I now can’t get enough of. Make this with any type of frozen berry you like!

Vegan Hemp Seed and Greens Smoothie

April 13, 2019 by Marisa

This hemp and greens smoothie is packed with protein and fresh ingredients to help boost healthy digestion!

Full of spicy ginger, sweet pineapple and protein rich hemp seeds, this green smoothie is perfect for breakfast or a snack!

This is my everyday smoothie. Well. Not EVERY day. I don’t drink smoothies daily but when I do have a smoothie, it’s often this one!

It’s not only a great way to get your greens but it’s packed with ingredients to help boost healthy digestion. And it comes together in minutes.

Gather these ingredients

Spinach or other greens
Hemp seeds
Fresh ginger
Frozen pineapple
Your favorite milk or coconut water

Benefits of hemp seeds

Hemp seeds are the star of this smoothie. Three tablespoons of shelled hemp seeds deliver a full 10 grams of protein plus healthy fats and fiber so it will stick with you a lot longer than most smoothies of just fruit and vegetables.

I use the hemp seeds instead of protein powder or yogurt – which would also be tasty if you do dairy.

Bananas for gut health?

Yes! The banana is a natural source of prebiotics, which help feed the healthy bacteria in the gut to potentially boost digestive health. The banana also sweetens the smoothie so you don’t need to add honey or other sweeteners.

I slice and freeze overripe bananas to get the most sweetness and of course to avoid tossing out brown bananas.

The fresh ginger contains gingerol, the compound that lends ginger much of its anti-inflammatory properties. We also know that ginger might help settle nausea. But it also adds a hint of spiciness to counter the sweet banana and pineapple flavors for a fresh finish.

Benefits of Pineapple

And pineapple is one of my favorite ways to get skin-nourishing vitamin C. In fact, just one cup of pineapple contains more than a full day’s supply of vitamin C.

Pineapple is also a source of bromelain, a protein-digesting enzyme that may make it easier to digest certain foods. This is why pineapple is often served after a meal as a digestive aid.

That’s a lot of goodness. Right?! And to think it comes together in just a few minutes makes it even more appealing.

I know that it’s sometimes hard to stomach the idea of a green smoothie but once you try a few you’ll find that it can be quite refreshing. This green drink comes with lots of benefits so I hope you’ll give it a try soon!
