I Took CBD Oil Every Day for My Anxiety—Here’s What Went Down

When I first learned about CBD oil, I’ll admit I was a bit skeptical. My mind immediately turned to weed and the unnerving experiences I’d had with heightened anxiety in college. For me, a person who’s already predisposed to overthinking, marijuana, no matter what the form, would typically put my mind into overdrive and result in a common yet dreaded side effect: Paranoia. But, let’s back up a bit. What even is CBD?

What Is CBD?

CBD is short for cannabidiol, which comes from the Cannabid sativa plant (also known as marijuana). It’s a naturally occurring substance used in oils and edibles to help calm and relax.

What is CBD

A bit of online digging led me to realize that the active ingredient in Charlotte’s Web Everyday Plus Hemp Oil, the product I’d been offered to test, was the chemical compound CBD, which stands for cannabidiol. Unlike THC, the other crucial compound in hemp and marijuana plants, CBD (when derived from the hemp plant) does not produce the psychoactive effects that make you feel “high”; instead, emerging science has hinted that CBD may actually ease anxiety, and therefore, makes you less likely to freak out.

For example, one study comparing the effects of THC and CBD found that, while THC increased anxiety by activating the neurotransmitters involved in the “fight or flight” response, CBD actually repressed autonomic arousal—or the nervous system response associated with sudden increases in heart rate or respiration. In other words, CBD may be ideal for people looking to relax and unwind.

While the science behind CBD’s effectiveness for treating anxiety, pain, and insomnia is still in its infancy, Charlotte Figi’s inspiring story sounds promising. Figi, a 6-year-old girl diagnosed with a rare and resistant form of epilepsy known as Dravet syndrome, was placed on hospice care and given a “do not resuscitate” order when her parents, desperate and frustrated with pharmaceutical medication, considered medical marijuana; specifically, a strain low in THC and high in CBD. Charlotte is now nearly seizure-free since she began supplementing with Charlotte Web’s CBD oil, which the brand named after Figi.

Legal and Safety Things To Know About CBD

The current CBD industry is like the internet’s early years. the Wild West. Legally, speaking, a Harvard Medical School blog post reads, “All 50 states have laws legalizing CBD with varying degrees of restriction, and while the federal government still considers CBD in the same class as marijuana, it doesn’t habitually enforce against it.” With heightened interest around CBD, it’s important to note that because CBD is currently unregulated, it’s difficult to know what you’re getting (whether that’s a tincture—commonly referred to as CBD oil, which is often combined with a carrier oil like coconut oil—topical products like creams and balms, sprays, or capsules), despite product labels and brand promises, the blog post further reads. It’s also important to note that people experience CBD differently. For the most part, the National Institute of Medicine says that while most people can tolerate CBD, side effects do exist. They might include dry mouth, drowsiness, and reduced appetite, among others.

That said, those interested in exploring the potential benefits of CBD should consult with their doctor (especially if you are pregnant, nursing, or currently taking medication) and be mindful of your dosage, writes Consumer Reports. And before you buy, Megan Villa, co-founder of the hemp-focused website and shop Svn Space, told Shape magazine to seek out a certificate of analysis. “Ask for a COA for the batch number of the product you have, since these products are made in batches,” she said. “You need to match the batch number to the COA that pertains to it.” Then, scan the report for potency (i.e. does the number of milligrams of CBD that the product label touts match the lab report?), contaminants and pesticides, and mold (which should live under the “Microbiological Testing” part of the report). Go a step further and note whether the testing lab is GMP (Good Manufacturing Principles) certified, and whether the lab is registered with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Shape magazine also suggests purchasing CBD products made from domestically-grown hemp, and reading up on the difference between full- and broad-spectrum and CBD isolate.

With that, I threw caution to the wind and asked for a sample. Here’s what happened—including what it feels like—when I took one full dropper of Charlotte’s Web’s Everyday Plus Hemp Oil in the mint chocolate flavor every morning for seven days.

My First Impression

It was actually a bad bout of jet lag after a trip to California that inspired me to finally test out the CBD oil (I’ll admit that my weed-based reservations kept me from trying it for the first few months). Knowing that the oil had also helped people with sleep issues, I squeezed one full dropper of the Everyday Plus oil onto my tongue, per the instructions, and waited.

Thirty minutes later, I was surprised by how subtle the effect was. While I expected a hazy nodding-off effect similar to melatonin’s, the oil simply relaxed my body ever so slightly—my heart stopped pounding against my chest, my legs stopped kicking beneath my sheets, my mind stopped racing. I wasn’t sure if it was the oil or the late hour, but eventually, physical relaxation gave way to mental relaxation, and I drifted off to sleep.

Reflecting the next morning, I was most surprised by the fact that I never felt “high” in any way—there was never a moment of It’s kicking in; I can feel it now like with pain medications or even anti-anxiety drugs. Considering it takes time, consistency, and the right dosage to experience the full effect, I continued taking the oil once a day for the next six days. Here’s what went down.

It Made Me Less Anxious and Edgy

Rather than overthinking a sternly worded email or analyzing a social interaction, I found it easier to recognize the irrationality of these thoughts and actually let them go.

While normally I’d be slightly tripped up by little things like an overly crowded subway car or a full inbox at work, the CBD oil seems to have taken the edge off of my anxiety a bit. Rather than overthinking a sternly worded email or analyzing a social interaction, I found it easier to recognize the irrationality of these thoughts and actually let them go. In some ways, I feel more like myself. With that said, I’ve still experienced some social anxiety when meeting new groups of people—I’d be interested to see what taking the full recommended dose would do.

I’m More Focused At Work

I work well under pressure, but being extremely busy at work has almost made me less productive—I’m constantly distracted by email, Slack, and the people around me, to the point where getting my work done becomes difficult. This week, however, I’ve found it easier to put my blinders on, block out all distractions (especially social distractions), and focus on one task at a time. I think this is partly related to the lessened anxiety—I feel more frazzled and off task when my anxiety is running high. It almost feels like a newfound sense of clarity and calm that enables me to focus.

I’m Falling Asleep Faster

I assume this is also a side effect of feeling less anxious, but I seem to fall asleep faster; within the 20-30-minute range rather than my normal 45 minutes to one hour (or longer). Not only do I seem to be skipping or at least shortening the whole tossing-and-turning phase of my sleep cycle, but I’m able to snap out of the overthinking that often keeps me up at night. Of course, there’s no telling whether a big life event would disrupt this newfound bliss, but I’d like to think it’s helped on a day-to-day basis.

The Verdict

Would I say that CBD oil has fundamentally changed my life? No. But per the Charlotte’s Web website, this is the typical first experience. “Anyone who has ever started a new vitamin or supplement routine knows the short answer to how long it takes to kick in is—’it depends.’ For many newcomers, they’re not sure what to imagine, or some anticipate a huge change right away. For most of us, though, dietary supplements take time.”

With that said, I’m definitely intrigued enough by the subtle effects to continue taking the oil and to possibly up the dosage to the recommended two full droppers of the 30mL bottle per day. Plus, I take comfort in knowing that it’s an all-natural product that’s responsibly grown on family farms in Colorado. Something that’s safe, legal, requires no prescription, and makes me less anxious, less scatterbrained, and more focused? I’m definitely on board.

Should I Take CBD In The Morning Or Night?

CBD is one of the most versatile natural compounds in the world, which is why it’s so enormously popular in many different CBD products these days. People take CBD for just about everything, and there’s a reason why it’s so uniquely useful. CBD is a cannabinoid, which means that it supports the endocannabinoid system that helps maintain homeostasis.

Cannabinoid receptors are located in every bodily system, which use cannabinoids to self-regulate. As a result, CBD has the potential to regulate basically every bodily process, ranging from sleep cycle to function of the digestive system.

CBD Versatility

Another thing that makes CBD versatile is that it can be taken at any time of the day. There are numerous delivery methods out there, and each offers a unique onset time and length of activation within the body. CBD is known for being extremely gentle, as it merely supports the endocannabinoid system’s ability to do its job, which is why people take it before going to sleep, on their way to work and as soon as they wake up, without it negatively interfering with any of these parts of one’s daily routine.

While CBD can definitely be taken at any time that it would come in handy, there are certain times during the day to take it so that it can be uniquely useful for a particular situation.

Take CBD in the Morning if…

You may think that taking CBD during the first half of the day is a bad idea, due to hemp’s reputation for helping one sleep and relax. The truth is, that a morning dose of hemp shouldn’t knock you out. CBD regulates the body’s processes, which means that it may actually do the opposite of making you sleepy when taken early on in the day. Yet, it’s gentle enough to make you feel refreshed rather than on edge.

The perfect products for this response is a single CBD gummy in the morning, such as our Binoid Gummies that have 10mg of CBD in them. This is a great CBD dosage in the morning to get your day started. Either this, or 1/2 of a dropper of a CBD oil. With our Binoid Drops, you should use 1/4th of a dropper to get the best morning experience.

#1: You’re Stressed Out About Work

One reason to take CBD in the morning is because you’re feeling stressed about work. Maybe you have a big meeting, or maybe that Monday morning feeling is getting in the way of your ability to feel productive and motivated. Regardless, taking CBD before work is a great idea. If you are looking for quick use, take a CBD gummy or capsule, since they both absorb quickly into the body. Or, if you’re looking for something that acts just as quickly but doesn’t require ingestion, try a CBD tincture.

#2: You Need a Boost to Get Your Day Started

Not all of us are morning people. If you’re looking for a way to give yourself a boost with the help of mother nature, CBD can be a great go-to. CBD may actually help you feel more invigorated early on in the day, so that you can feel more motivated during those early hours. #3: You Need Relief All Day

Are you dealing with some type of persistent issue that you’d like relief from at all hours of the day? If so, CBD can be taken as soon as you wake up. Depending on your needs, you can go with either a topical or an edible, as each can provide hours of activation in your body.

Our Binoid Healing Creams are designed to give your body and skin quick, easy, and non-greasy pain relief. Obviously the creams would be used for external use, and can help heal anything from joint and muscle issues, to inflammation and burns. However, if you are looking for an ingestible that is delicious and potent, you have to try our Binoid CBD Fruit Gummies! Pop a gummy during the day and feel the relief for many hours.

#4: You Want To Incorporate Hemp into Your Morning Run or Fitness Routine

A lot of us choose to engage in exercise during the morning rather than later on in the day. This is especially true for runners who prefer the earlier hours because there are less cars on the road. A lot of people take CBD after working out, to calm down and decrease adrenaline that might keep you up at night. Our Binoid Drops kick in within 5-10 minutes, compared to 1 hour with competitors. Ours also last 2 hours longer on average. This is due to them being water-soluble, and therefore better able to absorb into your body that is made of water.

Or if you are looking for muscle relief, it is a no brainer. Our CBD creams would be perfect for aiding relief from sore muscles post workout. The cream works similar to a foam roller if you massage it into your skin after every workout. You will feel less sore, and be able to workout faster and more effectively the next day! With a lot more energy. Ingredients such as Eucalyptus, Jojoba Oil, Menthol, and Citrus are great in reducing inflammation caused by working out.

#5: You Like Taking CBD with Your Daily Supplements

A lot of us take a number of supplements with our breakfast to get the day started off right. If you’re taking CBD as a way to generally support your body’s endocannabinoid system, try taking a hemp capsule or gummies along with the supplements that you take routinely each day.

Both of these products are great for discreet use, and fit right in with your daily supplement stack. Or if you want to get creative, you can mix our drops with your morning breakfast or water to help get your day started better and brighter.

#6: You Have a Morning Wellness Routine

Are you someone who likes to do some yoga or meditate early in the morning? Research shows that both yoga and meditation can help you approach the day of calm with a greater sense of balance and inner calm. And, lots of yoga and meditation enthusiasts find that CBD gets them into the right mode for these practices. For these applications, we recommend vaping CBD just before getting started, as it can provide more potent activation and activate within minutes.

We definitely suggest our CBD healing creams for this, as the light Eucalyptus scent can put your mind at ease and put you right in the mood to focus and meditate. However, if you are looking for a full-body effect, we suggest either pairing the cream with our fruit gummies, or take 1 dropper of our Binoid Drops by themselves for a powerful dosage to relax your entire body.

Take CBD in the Evening if…

Taking CBD during the evening hours is extremely common, especially among those who want to feel a sense of relaxation during the second half of the day.

#1: You Need Some Help Winding Down After a Long Day

It’s no secret that CBD is commonly used for its relaxing properties. Many of us want so badly to relax after a long day, but still feel edgy because of the stress that we’ve encountered earlier on. If you want to feel more calm as you wind down, hemp may be taken in the evening. We suggest using our drops as they can last for 4-5 hours. Meanwhile our Binoid gummies will last 6-8 hours, so those are better for when you sleep.

#2: You Work Out in the Evening Hours

If you exercise after work, then you can take CBD as a means to get your mind and body in the right mode after a successful fitness session. Because it is late, you have an even higher chance of staying up late at night as your body calms down from a gym session. This problem usually occurs depending on how intense the workout was.

The more intense and longer the workout, the harder it would be to effectively calm your body down. For less intense workouts, we suggesting trying CBD capsules as they are a lower dosage but high enough to give calm you down. However, if your workouts are extremely intense, or very late, we strongly recommend using 1 Binoid CBD Dropper (1mL). This is a powerful dose that can really calm you down, but not make you fall asleep.

Not only this, but you can add our CBD drops into your post-workout shake because they are water-soluble. Therefore easily mixing right in. Most CBD oils taste horrible, which is why we formulated ours to taste great. You can learn more on our website.

#3: You Need Some Help in the Sleep Department

A lot of people take CBD as part of their bedtime routine, in hopes that hemp will help them feel calmer so that they can sleep more easily. If this is the case for you, we suggest choosing a delivery method that acts fairly quickly and stays active for a while, such as a tincture. You would put the tincture drops under your tongue and hold for 1-2 minutes while it absorbs. However with our Binoid Drops you only need to hold under your tongue for 15 seconds maximum! This is because of being water-soluble and more easily able to absorb in your skin.

The key for taking CBD products at night for effective sleep, is taking a higher dosage of CBD. This means taking 1 full dropper of our drops or more! Or 2-3 of our gummies to achieve the best benefits for a long night of sleep. We suggest using both at the same times to compound benefits most effectively.

#4: You Want To Boost the Body’s Natural Recovery Process

While we sleep, our bodies are hard at work repairing and healing themselves. To support this crucial bodily process, you can take a CBD edible at night. This can be a gummy or capsule. These edible stays in the system for several hours, which means that those cannabinoids can support the body and help aid recovery during most of your sleep.

#5: You Have Pain That Prevents You from Relaxing

Many of us would love to relax in the evening, but we have some type of pain that prevents us from doing so. If this applies to you, then consider using a topical in the evening. Topicals work quickly and can last for many hours, so one dose may be all that you need.

If the pain is severe, we suggest pairing our CBD healing cream with our Binoid Drops for dual benefits for your body, and help yourself relax and take it easy when you start winding down.
