Build systems and infrastructure to sustain movement to end sex trafficking. WFMN Transforms and Expands Its Role to Ensure Women’s Safety. In our final year of funding the MN Girls Are Not for Sale campaign (2019), WFMN has been responsive to community partners and is focused on strengthening systems and infrastructure for strong, continued work.
As WFMN transforms its role, we will continue to invest in women’s safety and work with communities to end gender-based violence, a continuum that includes sexual harassment, assault, rape, and sex trafficking. As we move from catalyst to partner, WFMN will continue to invest in partners, like The Link, a youth and trafficking survivor-led organization, to convene and lead in the movement. With a continued focus on safety, WFMN will conduct research, advance policy, make grants, and increase public awareness and mobilization to create a Minnesota where all girls and women are free from every form of violence and can experience their homes, schools, and communities as safe places. As hosts of Super Bowl LII in Minneapolis, the Women’s Foundation of Minnesota and our partners in advocacy, law enforcement, and the business community statewide welcomed the opportunity to champion our nationally recognized statewide response to end sex trafficking. We know—from the research we commissioned—that while the Super Bowl may temporarily increase the likelihood for trafficking in a host city, the event is no different than other large public events. As co-chairs of Minnesota’s 2018 Super Bowl Anti-Sex Trafficking Committee, the Women’s Foundation of Minnesota, Hennepin County, and Ramsey County led the statewide effort to confront this daily reality and increase awareness of the issue. Together, we shaped a solution to prevent and disrupt sex trafficking during the Super Bowl with more than 40 organizations, including advocates, victim/survivor service providers, law enforcement agencies, businesses, cities, counties, and victims/survivors. We produced Minnesota’s Replicable Plan to Prevent & Disrupt Sex Trafficking During Major Events in Any City in America to guide future host cities through the successful execution of a plan to prevent and disrupt sex trafficking during the Super Bowl.
