Leite said the company has seen significant increase in e-commerce sales, which has "broken company records," adding that its digital efforts have also optimized backend efficiencies and prevented shipping delays. "Had we not made a lot of those investments in 2019, I don't know that we would be realizing some of the successes we've seen in e-commerce channels — especially when it comes to conversion rates, site speed, and the ability to execute and turn orders around out of distribution centers," she said. Despite The Vitamin Shoppe's success, Leite wasn't shy to speak about the challenges of navigating "patchwork" state policies that have contributed to vastly different protocols by region from a business leader standpoint. "When you think about through this entire process — and how states and jurisdictions closed and information might have been conflicting at times in different areas of the country — making sure you're able to articulate messages and being able to adapt has been very, very important for people and for companies right now," she said. Looking ahead as the pandemic wages on, and Americans remain sequestered at home, Leite said The Vitamin Shoppe is leaning into some new consumer shopping trends on the horizon, including a recent rise in demand for nutrition and weight-management products.
Leite said the company is also seeing increased sales of protein powders and iron supplements which she said may be tied to national meat shortages. "We're starting to see shelf stable food become more important because you can drink a protein shake and get a large dose of protein out of it, whereas you may not have been able to get it from another source of food," Leite said.
