Second hemp store opens in Jackson, hoping to bring pain relief to the community

From the inside, Hemp Life is like a small-scale pharmacy, with creams, oils and gummies to help relieve a range of pains and disorders, except there aren’t any pharmaceutical drugs — it’s all CBD-based products.
“A year ago, I had really bad migraines and couldn’t sleep,” said Hemp Life co-founder Jacob McNabb. “I went on this journey for about six months of doctors prescribing me meds, and my migraines only getting worse. Then I took CBD for the first time, and my migraines went away.”
CBD, or cannabidiol, is the non-THC part of marijuana but is also found in hemp. Hemp contains minimal amounts of THC, usually less than 0.3 percent, but still contains high amounts of CBD. THC is the principal intoxicating ingredient in cannabis.
In-depth research on CBD’s positive effects are limited. But pro-hemp groups like Canabo Medical Clinic say CBD can help with pain relief, combat anxiety and has anti-seizure properties — all with little long-term side effects.
“I didn’t realize how bad anxiety and depression are until I opened this shop,” McNabb said. “Ninety-five percent of the people who walk through that door suffer from it, and they say they’ve been on all kinds of antidepressants, but it just hasn’t worked.”
Hemp is illegal federally because of the Controlled Substance Act of 1970, which classified hemp along with marijuana as schedule 1 drugs. The law states that there is “no currently accepted medical benefits and it has a high potential for abuse.”
But states have the ability to pass their own legislation regarding hemp. In a 2014 Farm Bill the Tennessee Department of Agriculture became the overseer of an industrial hemp pilot program. It removed industrial hemp from the definition of marijuana in the criminal code and allowed for the cultivation of industrial hemp as an option for Tennessee farmers on a limited basis.
Over the last four years CBD products have been more mainstream and are now available not only in hemp stores but in many stores, like Kroger.
Choosing a CBD product
When a customer first walks into Hemp Life, the first thing Jacob or his wife Adrian, who is a co-owner, tries to do is understand what pain the customer is in.

Once they have diagnosed the problem, they walk the customer through a process of what products they sell, and what the customer would feel comfortable taking.
“Sometimes what’s best is an edible or cream,” McNabb said. “The fastest way is through smoking — but often times, if you have to take a drug test, we don’t recommend that option.”
McNabb said that smoking CBD could cause the customer to test positive for marijuana on a drug test, while other methods of using the products would not.
Each product has a range of doses that can help a customer depending on their level of pain. According to McNabb, most of the time someone starts off with a 15-20 milligram dose and works their way up based on how their body reacts.
For example, a common pain that many workers suffer from is back pain.
McNabb said a cream can be really good for back pain. He recommends they use a small dose and wait about 30-45 minutes to see if it helps the pain. If not, he’ll tell them to increase the dosage.

“It’s a pretty unique store, because you can buy something and within an hour the pain goes away,” McNabb said.
Hemp Life held a grand opening Friday. It’s located at 19P North Star Drive in North Jackson.
