We all know that plastic straws are a problem. But have you heard of hemp straws?
These eco-friendly beverage accessories actually offer some great advantages. In particular, they are strong. Really strong.
If you’ve ever tried using a paper straw, you know that it can be annoying. It seems like it only lets you take one or two sips of your drink before it disintegrates.
Now, of course we want these eco-friendly straws to be biodegradable. But, we don’t want them to dissolve right in our mouths! That defeats the purpose of having a straw in the first place.
Hemp straws offer a great option. That’s because these straws use bioplastic from hemp. The material is strong and resists disintegration. But at the same time, it will dissolve once it’s thrown out. Now, that seems like the best of both worlds.
The world blazes a trail toward a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future. As such, there are certain items that we use in our daily lives that are being changed out—for the better.
People make plastics in unsustainable ways. We use them in everyday items such as plastic straws and plastic bags. But these end up in our waterways and pollute the earth. Animals, who don’t know better, end up eating this garbage and ultimately dying off.
With companies, industries, and government taking action around the globe, a wave of change is happening. Not like the hippy movement of the ’60s, but a real, mainstream change that could yet save the planet from its biggest risk—us.
What are hemp straws?
Hemp straws are alternative drinking straws. They aren’t just alternatives from plastic ones, but from the paper ones produced using inefficient means.
Created using pulp from the hemp plant, hemp straws are strong, durable and sustainable. You can’t ask for more than that when you are slurping down your favorite beverage.
Many people are averse to using paper straws due to the fact they go soggy. But hemp is coarse and strong, so it won’t bend or fold as easily as paper straws. And it is one step better for the environment too!
How do they make them?
Hemp straws start their life as a seed and quickly grow to harvest-ready within 90-120 days.
From harvesting, manufacturers take the plants apart. The seeds are taken for food, the bud or flowers are taken for sale in dispensaries, the leaves juiced, the fibers in the stem used for clothing and the hurd shredded down and made into paper.
From there the paper is fashioned into a drinking straw and bound with a naturally forming resin, and you have a straw ready to go.
Also, some companies use hemp bioplastic to make the straws. These straws feel very similar to plastic ones. The only difference is that they are eco-friendly.
With technology allowing hemp straws to be produced in commercial quantities, they are readily available for sale and use around the world.
What are the benefits of hemp straws?
The benefits of hemp straws are twofold—for you and the environment. Firstly, they not only reduce the number of plastic straws in circulation, but also paper straws.
Manufacturers make them with the most sustainable production methods, as well as using the world’s most sustainable plant in its production.
Secondly, unlike the paper straws, they won’t bend, break, and get soggy. Hemp straws are strong, durable and provide a real alternative to the frustrations that come from paper straws.
Why do we need hemp straws?
The world needs to do something about the harm it has done and is continuing to inflict on the wildlife and the environment. This is not hippy rhetoric; it is simple fact.
By removing disposable, plastic items such as straws from our lives and replacing with a viable, sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative, we can start the long road of repair.
In addition, with such a short cultivation time, hemp production should be scaled up to replace not only the plastic straws we use but a wide range of other products.
Where can I get some?
Available at many cafes and restaurants already, hemp straws can be purchased for home use from hemp dispensaries and of course online. Although hemp straws are a great alternative, they are not mainstream yet. But give them time.
