Chico’s style guru, former executive is back home in Nebraska for Village Pointe event. A teen-aged Sherry Moeller wore corduroy bell bottoms with a matching vest and blazer in her senior yearbook picture at Wisner-Pilger High School.
The outfit was an early expression of style for a Nebraska girl who would go on to have a successful career as a fashion executive. Now called Sher Canada, she works nearly full time as the Chico’s women’s clothing retailer’s “style expert.” Semi-retired, she’s the former group senior vice president of stores for Chico’s FAS. Canada, 54, will wear a much more modern ensemble today when she visits Chico’s Village Pointe store for a trunk show billed as “Sher’s Style Event.” She will show the retailer’s “Black Label” collection, which normally is sold only online and at Chico’s highest-volume brick-and-mortar stores in places like Las Vegas and Florida. Canada also will offer personal styling advice to Chico’s shoppers who she said are concerned with maintaining a stylish look as they get older. (The chain targets the “over-40 woman.”) The store is expecting high interest in her visit and has invited its most frequent customers to schedule appointment times. However, Canada said every shopper is welcome, and the event is open to the public from 10 a.m. Canada studied at Kearney State College and then left Nebraska for a year at a fashion college in Miami, before embarking on a career that included time at retailers Miller & Paine in Lincoln, Richman Gordman in Omaha, and California-based Wet Seal before joining Fort Myers, Florida-based Chico’s in 1996 as a regional sales manager. She regrets not earning a college degree and said students today need one. But she said she was promoted at the company based on her strategic thinking skills, influence on others and ability to learn new information quickly.
She said she developed much of the sales training course that the stores use today. With her focus on what customers wanted, Canada helped execute a turnaround for the company begun with a new CEO and new Chico’s brand president in 2009, according to media reports about the business. Canada even called customers directly to win back their business. The growing company, which also includes brands White House Black Market, Soma and Boston Proper, had 11 stores in Nebraska and nine in Iowa at the end of its 2013 fiscal year. Canada’s visit today is the prize in a pants contest. She explained: Chico’s this year was looking to boost sales of its Peyton-style pant, and held a contest to see which of its 730 stores in 62 area districts could sell the most. The district that includes Omaha won, with the biggest percentage of sales in relation to its set goal. As a prize, the district manager got to choose one of her stores to host a visit from Canada. Shoppers who don’t already know Canada from her YouTube videos will encounter a fast-talking, perpetually peppy confidence booster who aims to treat women like their honest best friend — helping women find pieces that highlight their assets and dress around what they believe are flaws. “I get joy, not out of the sale, but in getting women into clothes that make them feel great and be happy and put a smile on their face,” she said. She believes in waist-defining belts, popped collars and wristloads of bracelets, but beyond those trimmings, ends her style videos by saying, “The single most beautiful thing a woman can wear every day is her confidence.” When the event is over, Canada will head home to Wisner to visit her family. Her parents, Dale and Helen Moeller, and two brothers live there. Dale Moeller is retired as a veterinarian’s assistant, and Helen Moeller is a longtime secretary and secretary’s assistant at the high school. Canada also has a sister in North Carolina; the women were both home recently to catch the Eagles concert at the CenturyLink Center. Canada, who married her personal trainer, Garrett Canada, in Las Vegas 10 years ago, offers friends in the Naples-Fort Myers area $1 million if they can guess where she’s from. They guess New York or California, never Wisner, Nebraska. “I went to country school until sixth grade,” Canada says. “I tell them, ‘Laura Ingalls,’ and they all laugh.” But her favorite drive is one she’ll get to make this week, heading west on Dodge, into Fremont, and north to Wisner, past the corn and the cows. “It just makes me feel, I don’t know, there’s nothing like it.” Chicos village pointe omaha ne.
