We speak to Dr Sarah Brewer about the benefits and potential risks factors associated with using cannabidiol for insomnia treatment. If you struggle with insomnia and have problems sleeping at night, you might have considered turning to CBD oil for help.

Cannabidoil (more commonly known as CBD) has a number of known health benefits, including easing symptoms of anxiety, pain and stress. But is CBD oil an effective treatment for insomnia or will it keep you awake? We speak to Healthspan Medical Director Dr Sarah Brewer about using CBD oil as a natural sleep remedy: Can CBD oil help you sleep? While there's still more scientific research to be done, preliminary studies have been in favour of CBD oil as an effective natural remedy for insomnia sufferers, thanks to the way it interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system. 'Cannabidiol (CBD) is a popular treatment for insomnia, and promotes refreshing REM sleep to reduced excessive daytime sleepiness,' says Dr Brewer. 'CBD is proven to be particularly helpful for sleep disorders in people with neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease.' 'A recent review of preliminary research found that cannabidiol (CBD) may have therapeutic potential for the treatment of insomnia and may hold promise for REM sleep behaviour disorder,' Dr Brewer adds. While you might associate cannabis with feeling relaxed and sleepy, using CBD oil to treat sleep disorders is slightly more complex than simply making you feel drowsy.

So how does it work as a treatment for sleep disorders? A review of 72 adults with anxiety or poor sleep found that anxiety scores decreased with CBD. 'It is particularly helpful for people whose sleep problems are due to anxiety,' explains Dr Brewer. 'A recent review of 72 adults with anxiety or poor sleep found that anxiety scores decreased within the first month in 79.2 per cent and remained decreased during the study duration. Sleep scores also improved within the first month in 66.7 per cent and it was well tolerated.' Similarly, one of the other major factors associated with insomnia is stress, but research has shown that CBD oil can improve your stress response, which can in turn help you to relax. 'Anecdotally, ever since I started taking CBD at night I have enjoyed really deep sleep and also feel more relaxed,' says Dr Brewer. A World Health Organization report issued in 2017 concluded that cannabidiol does not appear to have abuse potential or cause harm, but always proceed with caution. 'CBD interacts with liver enzymes involved in breaking down many prescribed medicines,' explains Dr Brewer. 'This can slow the way some drugs are metabolised, so their blood levels rise, which may lead to side-effects. If you are taking any prescribed medicines, it’s important to check with a doctor or pharmacist before taking CBD.' While the majority of CBD oil users don’t experience any negative effects, there are possible side effects. ⚠️ If you’re taking other medication for anxiety or any other condition, CBD oil could interact with common prescription medications, so it is important that you consult with your GP before you try it. Share this: Many use the herb as a sleep aid, but recent studies indicate that CBD likely increases alertness. In survey after survey, insomnia ranks as one of the top reasons for medical cannabis consumption. For example, in 2014, as detailed in the Hawaii Journal of Medicine and Public Health , a patient survey found forty five percent of patients reported fighting insomnia as a benefit to medical cannabis. Another survey, from the same year in the International Journal of Drug Policy , discovered fifty seven percent of consumers used the plant to help aid sleeping. Cannabis is clearly a go-to resource for patients seeking a better night’s sleep. The cannabis industry is taking note, with many strains marketed for their sedative and relaxing qualities. Accurately or not, makers of cannabidiol (CBD) frequently market their products as a sleep aid as well. Is cannabis useful for sleep, and if so, what strains or chemovars are best? The truth is – the verdict on cannabis for sleep is still out. Using cannabinoids for sleep may not be as helpful as patients believe. As is often the case with cannabis medicine, the research so far paints a very complicated picture. Are you sleeping because of the sedative effects of cannabis? More importantly, are these effects actually detrimental to sleep? In 2004, the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology published a paper entitled “Effect of D-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol and Cannabidiol on Nocturnal Sleep and Early-Morning Behavior in Young Adults.” The authors examined the effects of both THC and CBD on sleep and the impacts each cannabinoid had on alertness the next day. There were eight participants in the study, and the researchers designed it as a “double-blind and placebo-controlled with a four-way crossover.” Although small in scope, this study is well-controlled.

Participants received various doses of THC, CBD, or a combination of both. Doses ranged from 5 mg to 15 mg, and all were provided via oral spray approximately thirty minutes before bedtime. After analysis of the data, the authors made many profound discoveries. First, higher doses of THC did not impact sleep, although higher doses did impact alertness the following morning. Secondly, CBD dosed in combination with THC disrupted sleep, and at higher doses (15 mg), increased awake times. Unfortunately, this study did not examine CBD as a stand-alone. Based on the outcomes, the paper concluded, “THC would appear to be a sedative compound, whereas CBD would appear to have some alerting properties.” The authors went so far as to propose CBD as a valuable addition to the clinical consumption of THC to diminish that compound’s sedative effects. A study published in FEBS Letters (2006, on rats confirmed the complicated nature of CBD for sleep.

The paper “Cannabidiol, a Constituent of Cannabis sativa, Modulates Sleep in Rats,” reported the effects of CBD on lab rats during lights-on and lights-off period. In the lights-on period, the animals became more alert.
