The current cost for 4 ounces of whole, real, (good) Madagascar vanilla beans is around $50 (5-6 beans). Sure hope we don't have tomato poachers any time soon. Just wanted everyone to know that Olive Forge Herb Farm is closed for visitors until further notice.

Have you noticed the profusion of white blooms on this roadside plant? We call it White Snakeroot, once in the Eupatorium genus but confusing because the authorities ( for the lack of a better word) have split up and renamed some of these plants. This is a very special plant and can be a dangerous plant as well. You may remember that Nancy Hanks was Abraham Lincoln's biological Mother. When Abe was only 9 yo, his mother died from Milk Sickness. Stories are that Nancy could neither read nor write, she and Thomas Lincoln were raising their sons to be rail splitters. Here is where we like to say, “We know of a plant that helped give us Abraham Lincoln for our President”, because Thomas later married Sarah Bush Johnston Lincoln and it was Sarah who instilled in Abe the love of reading and studying.
This plant and its cousins have a toxin in the above ground parts, now known as tremetol that causes Milk Sickness.
The sickness comes to humans who eat the meat, milk and butter from cows that browse this plant. It was said that a healthy person could die from this sickness in only 9 days.
